Line of the night – “How can you read?”…”My mother taught me!” - Ben Linus
I only know of three methods of time travel;
1.) A telephone booth where you dial the Date you wish to travel to on the phone keypad. Lots of sparks and lightning come out of the antennas on top of the booth and off you go. “San Dimas High School football rules!”
2.) Stepping into a Quantum Accelerator, lots of light and then vanishing. You find yourself leaping from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong, and hoping each time that the next leap…will be the leap home.
3.) Generating 1.21 jigawatts of electricity and passing this energy threw a flux capacitor. But you need to get up to 88 mphs in a stainless steel Delorean to see some serious shit. “If your gonna travel through time, why not travel in style.”
This brings us to this week’s episode of LOST. We view a close shot of someone’s eye…I’m gonna guess it’s Jack. Yep…it’s Jack Shepard and he’s in the jungle. They did the exact same camera shots as Episode I of Season I to start the entire LOST series. I love the nostalgia of it all. They have to be back on the island. A scream in the background and off runs Mr. Fix-it. Hurley’s treading water and holding a guitar case. Jack saves the day and they find Kate too by the bank of the waterfall. “Yeah, we’re back!” NICE.
46 hour earlier.
Mrs. Hawking leads the Oceanic 2, Ben and Desmond, down into the depths of her batcave. Hmm, another Dharma station? Interesting. This one is called the Lamp Post which I am guessing is a reference to C.S. Lewis’s book “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.” (The Chronicles of Narnia). If you have kids, you’ve probably seen it, and if you are a nerd like me or Ian Dejesus you probably went out and saw it on your own in the theatre. Fun Fact - The Lamp Post was the first landmark the Pevensie kids found after they traveled through the wardrobe into the kingdom of Narnia.
Jack sees a picture on the wall of the island dated September 23, 1954. Interestingly enough Jack’s plane crashed on the island September 22, 2004. Mrs. Hawking, who reminds me of an old and bitter Mary Poppins, explains the Lamp Post Station. “It’s constructed on a pocket of electromagnetic energy” similar to other pockets around the world. “A very clever fellow built the pendulum.” (I’m guessing this is Daniel Faraday and I am sure it will be explained somehow later this season). They need to stop looking for where the island is supposed to be, and start looking where the island is going to be. They determined the island was moving. “Why do you think you were never rescued?”
Mary Poppins goes onto explain that there are windows that provide a route back, but they don’t stay open very long and there is about to close.
Desmond freaks out. He tries to convince the others not to believe Mrs. Hawking. “You said the island isn’t done with me, well I am done with the island!” See ya…wouldn’t wanna be-ya.
Sooo Jack and as many of the original Flight 815 crew has to get on Ajira Airways Flight 316 (significance of 316??) from L.A. to Guam. Mrs. Hawking gives Jack the suicide note left by John Locke. We find out that John committed suicide by hanging himself. What would drive him to do that? So we find out that John is going to help them get back by being a proxy or substitute. Jack must first give John something that belonged to Jack’s father.
Jack, as a man of science, has his doubts again and Mrs. Hawking says, “Start asking yourself if you believe it’s going to work. That’s why it’s called a leap of faith!”
Now the most interesting part of the episode, and kudos to devout catholic Joe Britz. The Thomas the Apostle painting is revealed and Ben discusses it’s significance with Jack. “Let us go so that we might die with him” Thomas couldn’t get his mind wrapped around the thought that Jesus was resurrected and needed to touch his wounds to be convinced. Bravo Joe Bravo. (See Joe’s comment on this in last week’s blog post).
Ben starts to leave the church because he made a promise to an old friend. Just a loose end that needs tying up. Ohhh I’m gonna be pissed If he goes and kills Penny Widmore. He made a promise to Charles Widmore last season that he was going to kill his daughter.
Jack sees his grandfather in a nursing home because he tried to escape. Ok, so what’s the significance of this??? Turns out Jack’s grand-dad had a pair of Jack’s dads shoes. Jackpot.
Jack gets home and there’s Kate lying on his bed, pretty upset I might add. “Where’s Aaron?” (That would have been my first question too.). Kate’s response – “Don’t ask questions, if you want me to go with you, you’ll never ask me that again!” Ok Kate, so where the hell is Aaron? Seriously! Don’t you know that I made a prediction that Aaron would go back to the island and be the future leader??? How could she have left him back there? Maybe…just maybe we just learned the significance of Claire’s mom being in town to collect her Oceanic Flight 815 check! Let’s show Claire’s mom in an early episode, so that it makes sense for Kate to hand over Aaron to his real grandmother to take care of him while she goes off to a time traveling island to play the resident floozie to Jack and Sawyer. Good move Kate, real good move!
It’s all about significance people. Ben calls Jack and is all jacked up…haha, but seriously…Ben has cuts all over his face and looks wet. Damn, I bet he just killed Penny. That’s b-s. Jack picks up John Locke’s body from the local butcher and has a real heart to heart with him while putting on his Dad’s shoes. Creepy.
Finally we get to the airport and someway, somehow all of the Oceanic 6 (except my boy Aaron) are on the plane. Somehow Hurley got out of LA County Jail and somehow Sayid is now under arrest and headed for Guam? Benry even makes the flight which doesn’t make sense. He had told John Locke in last year’s season finale that once he leaves the island he can never come back! I wonder if they will address this one!?!
Suddenly I hear a very familiar voice…”This is your captain speaking, Frank J. Lapidas” We are officially in the twilight zone. How ironic that Lapidas picked up a job with Ajira Airways. “Wait a second, we’re not going to Guam are we?” Frank’s a great character, and I hope he makes it to the island as well.
They’ve been flying for a while and Jack finally opens up John’s suicide note. It reads…Jack, I wish you had believed in me.” - JL That’s it. At exactly 9:58 PM we get some turbulence and a bright flash of light. The plane must have been within the radius of a time traveling Island flash. We hear WHOOSH, some bright light and BAMM Jack is lying on the ground in almost the exact same position as when he crashed there on September 22, 2004. After the light they all just woke up in the jungle.
Hmm I hear a car radio. But that must mean that they…are…in the past (during the time of the Dharma initiative). Up rolls an old school VW Van. I tell Angela, “this is gonna be Ben’s dad before he died.’ Uhhh nope.
“Jin?”
BAMMM Roll the credits.
